About Editing .htaccess File

Previous Entry Editing .htaccess File Feb. 25th, 2005 @ 12:56 pm Next Entry
I can't have SSI in my subdirectories according to my hosting company unless I enter in a few lines of code into the .htaccess file. Simple right, you open it in vi, then edit, and save! Yay it's working, but it's not working. I tried to alter the /var/www/html/ .htaccess file, but it doesn't work. I am not sure why it does because I have tried putting the lines of before and after their code. Then again, there are several other .htaccess files I could edit, but that doesn't make since either. I sent them a message about this, and I will expect an answer in 3-7 days. *roll* Granted, it's not like my page is credit sheerly on SSI, but I do use it for a few simple scripts like the date, time, and modification date.

Anyone have a clue?

This is the lines of code I am to enter:
AddType text/html .shtml
AddHandler server-parsed .shtml
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks Includes

This is the .htaccess file in the /var/www/html/ directory:
# -FrontPage-

IndexIgnore .htaccess */.??* *~ *# */HEADER* */README* */_vti*

order deny,allow
deny from all
allow from all

order deny,allow
deny from all

AuthName www.mentalward.org
AuthUserFile /home/virtual/site60/fst/var/www/html/_vti_pvt/service.pwd
AuthGroupFile /home/virtual/site60/fst/var/www/html/_vti_pvt/service.grp

It worries me to see the "IndexIgnore"

If this isn't the right place to ask, please direct me somewhere that I can. Thanks!

I think IndexIgnore is telling the webserver to NOT show files like .htaccess in an file index listing... make it invisible, in other words.

we know Apache seems to do this automatically but this is just making it sure

how come there are two 'order' entries

They gave me a little more insight, but no answers.. They were telling me a lot of that is due to if I was using FrontPage, hence the "FrontPage" line of code.

As for the "order" entries.. One is for POST and another for DELETE. I'm not sure why that didn't show.

Sounds like a lot of work just to implement SSI. And you have to wait 3-7 days for a support response? Switch hosts with the quickness, I say. :)

Unfortunately, I have a year contract so I can't get out of if just yet, but I assure you that I will be leaving them as soon as possible.

http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/directives.html
that'll explain to you what the directives in the file mean

the ordering is alarming, it basically says not to let anyone access the server. though, that's probably edited somewhere later.. dunno. is this a dedicated server, or do you share it with other people? do you even have access to edit and save that file? it looks like it's a global file affecting all sites hosted on the server.

I thought the ordering was unusual, too. As for answering your questions...

It's not a dedicated server, and I believe (and I'm not sure on this) that it is a partitioned server for multiply users. I do have access to edit the .htaccess file, but not much else since I am not root. It isn't a global file, it's just a file that would be associated with my website/space.

I tried to alter the /var/www/html/ .htaccess file, but it doesn't work.

What exactly doesn't work?

When I place the new code into the .htaccess file, the SSI doesn't work still.
